I view myself as a designer that creates conceptual pieces for exhibition and explores culture and identity in my work. I allow research sources to translate into my artwork through colours, textures and forms. One artist I look to is Nick Cave as he is a great source of inspiration for me due to his use of eclectic colours and the materials he uses to create avant-garde shapes which reflect his identity and background. Through my project ‘Zangbeto’, I challenge western ideals on black culture and set out to make my viewers re-evaluate what they regard as Voodoo, in contrast to Hollywood and post-colonial education. As a whole, I hope to encourage my viewers to see past the idea of ‘one type of blackness’ and as I have, appreciate the many different variations of beauty found in different black traditions.
