Emily May Cottrell

I am a BA (Hons) Costume Design and Construction student, and I have a particular interest in historical costume and embroidery. I enjoy the therapeutic process of embroidery and love they way it can add personality and texture to a character’s design. During the research and design phase for my Marie Antoinette Project, I looked at late 18th century upper class fashion and silhouettes; I also developed a skill in corsetry. My Jack Calico Project looks at early 18th century menswear, focusing on costume breakdown and ageing techniques. I value sustainable practice, whether that involves repurposing fabric, sourcing second hand, or piecing patterns to reduce waste. This is something I want to help change in the industry and continue to be conscious of in my career. After graduating I will be looking for opportunities to expand my knowledge as well as meeting and working with new people.
