As a performer in a type of performing arts called Colourguard, I developed a passion for costumes, specifically for dance. Wearing many different types of costumes to match each design concept made me wonder how I would interpret those ideas through my own designs.
During my time at Nottingham Trent University, I have learnt and developed skills in both designing and constructing costumes, using my final year to focus on dance costumes to help me be ready for the industry. Within my projects, I designed a Dutch adaptation of Coppélia and constructed a historically accurate traditional folklore dress tutu. My second project was self-directed, so what better way to place myself within the Colourguard costume world than by developing a production concept inspired by the story and aesthetics of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and constructing a Colourguard costume for one of the characters. This has helped me connect my performance background with my future plans in costume design.
