I have always believed that to be a sustainable knitwear designer, one must create clothing collections with a concern for the environment at the forefront. I have found it hard to balance the concept of creating new clothing for a world that already has far too much. However, something that has stood out to me, was the lack of clothing made that has been built to last. We are saturated in the fashion industry with pieces that are cheaply made; no thought for the makers and no care about the conditions in which they work. This is why a Master’s in Knitwear, learning how to create pieces that last, was the first stepping stone for me to launch my sustainable knitwear brand, Off-Cut Lottie. I have used this time to explore concepts, test ideas and create a capsule collection of durable clothing made from locally sourced, 100% natural materials. I aim to sustainably create pieces that can be interchanged with one another in the collection, built to withstand years of wear.
