Anyone can become homeless. Homelessness is a symptom of a broken social system no longer able to provide the basic needs of vulnerable citizens. This work responds to a complex and multi-faceted problem. Through contemporary approaches in documentary practice, I've produced visual studies of homelessness and the urban infrastructure that reveals the underpinning symptoms; urban privatisation and diminished public space. Many of those who find themselves homeless are individuals who have fallen below the poverty line, with little or no access to affordable housing, healthcare or social services, exacerbated by lack of investment in social welfare programs. My work with homeless people is an important contribution towards changing perception and social attitudes of homelessness. My work ignites a call for social obligation; the shift from an individual to a more collective outlook that in turn offers the potential to create a more equitable and just society.
