My work commemorates the many lives that were lost in the British-Igbo anti-colonial resistance that raged between 1883 and 1914. It fuses archival materials with newly created photographs that speak to an impulse to rescue an overlooked narrative from the noose of extinction. My recent practice is predicated on the conviction that the photographic image (and the histories in which it is embedded) opens up space for other ways of thinking about the past. I have done mostly portrait, wedding and documentary photography in the past 6 years, but I am keenly fascinated by photographic projects that are steeped in remembering, preserving and valuing the ethos of my Nigerian heritage.
