Zainab Giwa

Hello, my name is Zainab Giwa and I am currently completing the MA Graphic Communications Course. I grew up In Berlin and completed my Diploma for Digital and Print Media Design at Ernst-Litfaß-Schule and the IHK Berlin. I later moved to the UK to start my Undergraduate in Media, Communication and Culture at NTU. I am interested in how marginalized communities challenge dominant narratives. My research into Blackness and queerness within punk culture examined authenticity, resistance, and the rejection of conformity, themes that also connect to my own experience of a late ADHD diagnosis. Building on this, my final project explores braided hair as a form of cultural expression, storytelling, care, and heritage, celebrating self-defined Black identities and collective memory. I am also going to be taking it back to my roots of printing, thus wanting to approach the methods of mixed media to create a Zine.
