Judith Shackman

I am a Fashion and Textile MA student with a Knitwear Focus, based in Manchester. I specialise in sustainable textiles and circular design. My project Wear Wool Well explores the creative and technical potential of 100% British wool as a fully traceable, biodegradable material, challenging perceptions of its place within contemporary fashion and my aim is to challenge perceptions of British wool. Working through a balance of experimental knit processes and concept-led design, I combine hand, Domestic and Industrial machine techniques particularly Stoll to transform raw material into resolved outcomes. My project is inspired by natural forms and local sourcing, and is rooted in a “farm-to-yarn” philosophy, advocating for a slower, more responsible approach to fashion that considers a garment’s entire lifecycle which then contributes to a more responsible and innovative future for fashion and textiles.
