Hello, I am Katie Foland, an MA Graphic Communication student developing a speculative design project exploring gender, technology, and artificial intelligence. My project centres on the creation of a fictional AI system named S.U.G.A.R. (Simulated Understanding, Gratitude, and Affection Response). Designed as a critique of how femininity is often simplified, aestheticized, and dehumanised in digital assistants, S.U.G.A.R. plays with visual and verbal tropes associated with hyper-feminine AI personas. By exaggerating these traits, I aim to expose the underlying biases in how such systems are developed and perceived and particularly by male designers and users. This user manual functions as both an artefact and a provocation. After completing my MA, I plan to continue researching and designing within this space working across speculative design, interactive media, and critical tech.
