I am a Nottingham based artist, specialising in acrylic painting and collage. My practice stems from a love of cinema and a deep hatred of sexism in the film industry. I paint scenes depicting sexist ideologies with bold, handwritten text to bring awareness to the battle between Hollywood and women. I create elevated protest signs, designed to look like film posters, drawing attention to the sexist tropes prevalent in cinema; the femme fatale, sexy spy, unnecessary nudity and many more stereotypes, all contribute to the treatment, discrimination and objectification of women. My art educates and enlightens cinephiles and non-cinephiles, exposing how viewers are inured and desensitised to the blatant sexism shown on screen. I am highly influenced by feminist artists, such as Cindy Sherman, as well as contemporary female film makers who subvert the sexist language of cinema, like Greta Gerwig.
