In my project I have created knitted fabrics, inspired by the ghost in a theatre production of the “Woman in Black”, a 1983 gothic supernatural horror novel written by Susan Hill. I have explored the mystic, ghostly themes of Gothic literature in particular the themes of isolation, fear, and despair which run through the book by using textures, materials and colours which all express the feelings of hopelessness and sadness. The Woman in Black portrays decay, death, fear, dread, revenge, and horror throughout the production and so I want to express a dark, moody, and foreboding palette of colours. This is coupled with aspects of decay and death and the fearfulness of spectral visions which I want to encapsulate in my designs. Using my knitted fabric, I plan on making the costume for the Woman in Black and by using knitted structures I have been able to develop light floaty materials that suggest that the figure is ghostly and eerie.
