My degree collection, Under the Feminine Skin revolves around the ‘Male Gaze’ and misogynistic attitudes that are still prevalent today in society. Focusing on the value placed on the clothes women wear and how much skin they have exposed I have explored using latex within my designs to develop and produce a visceral multi-disciplinary collection of work. Latex has connotations of S&M and its ties to fetish-wear were primarily what lead me to experiment with it in my work, enforcing the concept of skin being associated with sex. With it I have created a contradiction between heavy and hardwearing fabrics where the focus of the piece is the design itself and incredibly fragile skin-like pieces, representing the skin itself or what is beneath.
