Charlie Millar
Throughout my MA, I have explored and questioned the relationship between gender, culture and fashion, writing about everything from Balenciaga to buzzcuts. For my final thesis, I chose to focus on fingernails, studying them as a site of gender expression. I discovered nails are filled with meaning on many different levels - and are an under studied area of visual culture full of potential. Before joining MA Culture, Style and Fashion, I worked for 7 years as a knitwear designer for brands like ASOS, Topshop and River Island. I currently run a knitwear design consultancy and bespoke label. In the future, I want to do it all; design, write, teach, research and continue my studies into visual expression of gender and sexuality.
